respiratory_anatomyTehran, April 26, IRNA -- Iranian physicians successfully produced the first ever artificial windpipe (trachea) from polymer and planted it in throat of a patient, it was announced on Monday.

The implant was successfully done on a 29-year female patient at Masih Daneshvari hospital in Tehran.

The project was conducted by Dr Jalaleddin Ghanavi who explained the procedures to reporters on Monday.

The implant was done without surgical operation. He said that he planted a frame on throat of the patient to fix the artificial organ.

"Then, stem cells from the same organ were injected into bone marrow of the patient to help reproduce cartilage bone to support the implant."

Head of Masih Daneshvari Hospital, Ali Akbar Velayati said the system is to save life of patients who do not respond to existing treatments and surgeries.

In this system, the patient’s own stem cells are used, he said.
